Rams Ramashia

Advocate

Following the completion of his B. Juris and LLB degrees, respectively; Rams Ramashia was invited to join the SACHET TRUST as a part-time lecturer, to teach underprivileged UNISA law and commercial students. In 1994 Rams was admitted as an advocate of the High Court. In 1996 he completed an LLM degree in Advanced Labour Law at Wits University as a part- time student.

Rams was appointed Director General ( DG) of labour. At the material time, Rams also served as Chief Negotiator of the government caucus at the National Economic Development and Labour Council ( NEDLAC ) and as representative of the South African Government at the International Labour Organization(ILO) One of Rams Ramashia’s celebrated achievements as Director General was broking of a deal of a package of labour market policy framework between the labour union federations and the organized business community following an outcry from both constituencies regarding perceived unintended consequences of the package of labour legislation adopted by the democratic government.

The outcome of the negotiations which Rams Ramashia presided over was an amendment to the Labour Relations Act: 66 of 1995 and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act: 75 of 1997, respectively.

In June 2004 Rams Ramashia was appointed Regional President for BP: Africa. This resulted in him being elected Chairman of the South African Petroleum Industry Association ( SAPIA) which lobbied African governments to transform commercial and labour policies for the petroleum industry into becoming progressive and inclusive.
Rams Ramashia joined the Pretorial Bar in January 2011 where he served on its Executive Council for three terms. In 2018 Rams Ramashia was elected Treasurer of the Pretoria chapter of the Advocate for Transformation (AFT). In 2019 he was elected Chairman of the same branch of AFT and by virtue thereof served on the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the AFT.

Rams Ramashia joined the Johannesburg Bar in August 2020 as a member of the Victoria Mxenge Group. His areas of practice include Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Corporate Law, Commercial Litigation, Arbitration and Employment Law ( including Chairing Disciplinary Hearings and resolving formal staff grievances in government departments and commercial companies ) Rams Ramashia also has extensive experience in serving and chairing various boards of listed and private
companies as Non-Executive Director
